Properties of Matter: Chemical and Physical Properties: 5th Grade

atom The smallest particle of an element that still has the characteristics of the element.
chemical property A characteristic of matter that can only be observed when matter is changed into a new kind of matter. Examples include heating, baking/cooking, rusting, exploding, and sometimes changing color.
density How much matter is in a certain volume.
mass The amount of matter in an object.
matter Anything that has mass and takes up space. Things you can see, feel, smell, and/or taste.
metric system Measurement system based on the number ten.
molecule A particle of matter made from at least two joined atoms.
physical property A characteristic of matter that can be observed without changing the matter into something new. Size, shape, color, odor, texture (feel).
states of matter Forms of matter, like solid, liquid, and gas.
volume The amount of space matter takes up.
weight A measure of the pull of gravity on an object.
