Imagery Words or phrases that appeal to a readers 5 senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch
Simile Comparison of 2 things that have something in common, using the words "like" or "as"
Figurative Language Made up of words or phrases that present ordinary things in new and unusual ways
Personification Giving an animal, object, or idea a human quality
Metaphor Comparison that states that one thing is actually something else (Does not use "like" or "as")
Tone Poet's attitude towards his or her subject
Form Way a poem looks on a page
Free Verse Poems that are written in no particular pattern
Stanzas Lines of a poem that are arranged in groups
Rhyme Repetition of similar sounds at the ends of words
Rhythm Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem
Alliteration Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of two or more words
Repetition Use of sounds, words, phrases, or whole lines more than once
Speaker Voice of the poem
Onomatopoeia Use of words whose sound suggests their meaning
Idiom An expression that has meaning different from the meaning of its individual words
Line Single verse of poetry
Line length Determines the tone; short lines show a peaceful tone and longer lines show suspense, drama, energy
Hyperbole Exaggerated figure of speech
