Poetry
| Term | Definition |

| poem | A piece of literature that has rhythm, often rhymes or repeats, and expresses a feeling or idea. |
| rhythm | a beat, tempo or pattern |
| rhyme | when two or more words have the same ending sound (ex: rhyme, chime, time) |
| repetition | using the same word, phrase or sentence multiple times |
| verse | a line in poem; similar to a sentence in a paragraph |
| stanza | several verses grouped together in a poem; similar to a paragraph in a story |
| alliteration | repetition of the first sound or sounds in a group of words (ex: She sells seashells down by the seashore.) |
| onomatopoeia | words that imitate sounds (ex: crunch, smash, bop, bang) |
| sensory poems | poems that appeal to the five senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell |
| simile | a comparison of two objects or people using the words like or as (ex: She shines like the sun.) |
| metaphor | a direct comparison of two objects or people (ex: He is as tough as nails.) |
| hyperbole | an over-exaggeration (ex: I am so hungry I could eat a horse.) |
| idiom | a saying passed down that does not mean what it says (ex: Cat got your tongue?) |
| personification | giving human characteristics to non-human objects (ex: The rain pounded on the window.) |
