Translucent materials allow only part of the light to pass through (lets a little light through)
Opaque materials completely block light from passing through
Transparent materials allow light to pass through with little or no disturbance; allows the light to pass clearly through
Light travels in waves in a straight path
the top of a wave is the crest or peak
the bottom of the wave is called the trough
a wavelength is the distance measured from crest to crest on a wave
Refracted light appears to be bent
Reflected light bounces off or back
Transmitted light is passed through an object
Absorbed light is taken in as heat
Natural light is found in nature - sun and stars
Artificial light is man made - light bulbs or flashlight
Bioluminescence is the ability of living things to make light in their own bodies by a chemical reaction - fireflies, lightning bugs, and some fish
lenses are pieces of transparent material that can be glass or plastic
convex lenses are thicker in the middle and thin on the edges and make objects appear bigger than than they really are
concave lenses are thinner in the middle and thicker on the edges and make objects look smaller than they really are
some common optical tools are eyeglasses, flashlights, cameras, binoculars, and microscopes
It takes light from the sun less than 8 1/2 minutes to reach the Earth
Light waves do NOT need a medium (any matter) through which to move
