Important vocabulary to know from Unit 5

energy the ability to do work
work a way to give something energy; done when a force is exerted over a certain distance
power how much work is done in a certain amount of time; how quickly work is done
joules the unit for work and energy
watts the unit for power; stands for joules of energy per second
chemical energy energy occurring from a chemical change, such as breaking or forming chemical bonds
thermal energy energy from moving molecules (we sense it as "heat")
nuclear energy energy from splitting or fusing an atom
electromagnetic energy energy stored in electromagnetic waves (AKA light or radiant energy)
sound energy mechanical waves of energy due to noise
electrical energy energy of moving electrons
mechanical energy energy that deals with motion and position of an object; has two subtypes
kinetic energy energy of motion
(gravitational) potential energy energy of position (height)
Law of conservation of energy Energy can NEVER be created or destroyed, just transformed from one form to another
energy transfer (or energy transformation) when one form of energy changes into another form of energy
reference line the height that is considered "0"; all other height measured from this point.
