| Hallucinogens | Psychedelic drugs distorting perceptions, evoking sensory images in the absence of sensory input. |
| Amphetamines | Drugs that stimulate neural activity, speeding up body functions, associates energy, mood changes. |
| Stimulants | Drugs that excite neural activity and speed up body functions. |
| Barbiturates | Drugs that depress the CNS activity, reducing anxiety but impairs memory and judgment. |
| Alcohol Dependence | Alcohol use with tolerance, withdrawal if suspended, continues to abuse. |
| Psychological Dependence | Psychological need to use a drug to relieve negative emotions. |
| Depressants | Drugs that reduce neural activity and slows body functions. |
| Physical Dependence | Physiological need for a drug, suffering unpleasant with-drawal symptoms when the drug is discontinued. |
| Tolerance | With repeated use, achieving the desired effect requires larger doses. |
| Psychoactive Drug | Chemical substance that alters perceptions and moods. |
| Posthypnotic Suggestion | A suggestion, made during hypnosis, to be carried after the person is no longer under hypnosis. |
| Dissociation | Split in consciousness, allows thoughts and behaviors to occur with others. |
| REM Rebound | Sleep increase followed by sleep deprivation. Created by repeated awakenings. |
| Latent Content | Underlying meaning of a dream. |
| Manifest Content | Remembered storyline of a dream. |
| Sleep Apnea | Sleep disorder caused by temporary breathing during sleep, repeated awakenings. |
| Suprachiasmatic Nucleus | Pair of cell clusters in the Hypothalamus responding to light-sensitive retinal proteins. |
| Delta Waves | Large, slow brain waves associated with deep sleep. |
| Alpha Waves | Slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake state. |
| Change Blindness | Failure to notice changes in the environment. |
| Inattentional Blindness | Failure to see visual objects when attention is focused elsewhere. |
| Selective Attention | Focused conscious awareness |
| Cognitive Neuroscience | Interdisciplinary study of the brain activity linked to cognition with perception, thinking, memory and language included. |
| Dual Processing | Perception, memory, thinking, language and attitudes operating on 2 levels processed simultaneously. |
| Consciousness | Our awareness of ourselves and our environment. |
| Blindsight | Responding visually without consciously experiencing it. |
| Circadian Rhythm | Biological clock; regular bodily rhythms that occur on a 24hr cycle. |
| REM Sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) | Recurring sleep during vivid dreams. Muscles relaxed, body systems active. |
| Sleep | Periodic, natural loss of consciousness. |
| Hallucinations | False sensory experience, seeing something in absence of external visual stimulus. |
| Insomnia | Recurring problems in falling or staying asleep. |
| Narcolepsy | A sleep disorder caused by sleep attacks. |
| Night Terrors | Sleep disorder caused by high arousal and being terrified. |
| Dream | A sequence of images, emotions, and thoughts passing through a sleeping person's mind. |
| Hypnosis | Social interaction involving perceptions, feelings, thoughts, or behaviors occurring spontaneously. (Hypnotist) |
| Addiction | Compulsive drug craving and use, despite adverse consequences. |
| Opiates | Opium and its derivatives, depressing neural activity, temporarily lessening pain and anxiety. |
| Nicotine | Stimulating, highly addictive psychoactive drug in tobacco. |
| Methamphetamine | Powerfully addictive drug that stimulates the CNS, with speedy body functions, associated with energy and mood changes. Reduces baseline dopamine levels. |
| Near-Death Experience | Altered state of consciousness after a close brush with death. |
| Withdrawal | Discomfort and distress that follow discontinuing the use of an addictive drug. |
| LSD (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide) | Powerful Hallucinogen drug. Also known as "Acid" |
| Ecstasy (MDMA) | Synthetic stimulant and mild hallucinogen producing euphoria and social intimacy. |
