Science Test 12/2

Flash cards for science test 12/2/08

QuestionAnswer
How can you increase the pressure of a gas inside of a container? Adding heat which adds more energy.
As volume increases pressure _____ As volume increases pressure DECREASES
As volume decreases pressure _____ As volume decreases pressure INCREASES.
What does amorphous mean? A substance that doesn't produce crystals.
Give two examples of amorphous substances. Wood and wax. (another: plastic)
Solids Has a definite shape and volume. Particles are close together. Strong attraction (stuck together) but move slowly (shake in place)
Liquids Take shape of container. Particles move kind of fast. No change in volume.
Gases Change both shape and volume. Particles move fast. Space between particles can change.
Charles' Law Volume of gas goes up temperature goes down.
Boyle's Law Volume of gas goes up pressure goes down.
What is pressure? When the atoms hit the walls of it's container and collide.
How can you make the atoms collide more? Add more atoms, put in smaller space, or add energy.
As temperature increases, pressure increases. Why? Because the atoms move faster and that makes the collide more.
The 2 Gas Laws (Charles' and Boyle's laws) applies to gases in ______ containers. The 2 gas laws apply to gases in CLOSED containers.
How else can you increase the pressure of a gas in a container? Add more matter (= more collisions)
The four states of matter: Solid, liquid, gas, and plasma
The differences between the states of matter: Solids have definite shape and volume, liquids change shape but not volume, gases change both shape and volume.
What is it called when a gas goes to a liquid? Condensation.
What are the five changes of state? Freezing, melting, vaporization, condensation, and sublimation.
True or False: Many physical changes are difficult to undo. FALSE
Yes or No: Can a physical property be observed without changing the substance? YES
What is the basic difference between a physical property and a chemical property? A physical property is explaining it and a chemical property is observing it.
What is easier to determine: physical or chemical? Physical because you can just look at it.
True or False: Chemical properties describe matter? TRUE
True or False: Chemical properties can be observed with your senses? FALSE
Yes or No: Does paint react with oxygen? NO
True or False: Characteristic properties help scientists to distinguish one substance from another. TRUE
What is a physical change? A change that affects one or more physical properties.
True or False: If you make a physical change to a substance the identity of the substance changes. FALSE
Many physical changes are ____ to undo. EASY
How is baking a cake a chemical change? Because you got something completely different.
If there are three marbles, one large, one medium, and one small. Do they have similar density? Why? Yes because they're made out of the same substance.
What would you use to find mass? A balance.
What would you use to find the volume of a liquid? Graduated cylinder.
What would you use to find the volume of a regularly shaped object? Ruler.
What is the density formula? mass / by volume.
