| High-Stakes Tests | State mandated standardized tests that assess students' mastery of academic standards |
| Tenure | job security granted to teachers after satisfactory performance for a specified period, usually two to five years |
| Highly Qualified Teachers | teacher who have a bachelor's degree, full state certification and knowledge of each subject they teach |
| Teaching Certificate | a license to teach |
| Multi-Age Classrooms | classrooms with students of different grade levels |
| Charter Schools | independent public schools that are given a charter to operate by a school district, sate or national government |
| Alternative School | a small, highly individualized school seperate from the regular school in a district |
| Magnet School | offers curriculum that focuses on a specific area of study such as the arts, math, science, or technology |
| IEP | Individualized Education Program developed by special education teachers for students to work collaboratively with regular classroom teachers, parents, and other school staff |
| ELL's | English Language Learners, those whose first language is not English |
| Cultural Competence | the ability to communicate cross-culturally and the willingness to learn about students' diverse cultural backgrounds |
| Peer Coaching | an arrangement where teachers grow professionally by observing one another's teaching and providing constructive feeback |
