vocabulary for physics like newtons 2nd law of motion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Newton's second law of motion | States that the acceleration of an object is in the same direction as the net force on the object. |
| Friction | the forces that oppose the sliding motion of 2 surfaces that are touching each other. |
| Static friction | the frictional force that prevents two surfaces from sliding past each other. |
| Sliding friction | the force that opposes the motion of 2 surfaces sliding past each other. |
| Air resistance | opposes the motion of objects that moves through the air. |
| Gravity | an attractive force between any 2 objects that depends on the masses of the object and the distance between them. |
| Weight | Gravitational force exerted on an object. |
| Centripetal acceleration | Acceleration of an object toward the center of a curved or a circular path. |
| Centripetal force | a net force that is directed toward the center of a curved or circular path. |
| Newton's 3rd law of motion | when an object exerts a force on a second object, the second one exerts a force on the first that is equal in strength and opposite in direction. |
| Momentum | an object is the product of its mass and velocity. |
