Introduction to Waves
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Wave | A repeating disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space |
| Crest | Highest point of a wave |
| Refraction | Bending of a wave as it moves from one medium to another |
| Medium | A material through which a wave transfers energy |
| Trough | Lowest point of a wave |
| Diffraction | Bending of a wave as it passes around a barrier |
| Transverse | Matter moves around at right angles to the direction the wave travels |
| Rarefaction | Spread apart portion of a compressional wave |
| Interference | When two or more waves overlap and combine to form a new wave |
| Longitudinal | Matter that moves in the same direction as wave travels |
| Wavelength | Distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it |
| Standing Wave | When waves continuously interfere with each other |
| Frequency | How many wavelengths pass a fixed point each second |
| Resonance | Ability of an object to vibrate by absorbing energy at its natural frequency |
| Amplitude | Measure of the energy in a wave |
