Introduction to Waves

TermDefinition
Wave A repeating disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space
Crest Highest point of a wave
Refraction Bending of a wave as it moves from one medium to another
Medium A material through which a wave transfers energy
Trough Lowest point of a wave
Diffraction Bending of a wave as it passes around a barrier
Transverse Matter moves around at right angles to the direction the wave travels
Rarefaction Spread apart portion of a compressional wave
Interference When two or more waves overlap and combine to form a new wave
Longitudinal Matter that moves in the same direction as wave travels
Wavelength Distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it
Standing Wave When waves continuously interfere with each other
Frequency How many wavelengths pass a fixed point each second
Resonance Ability of an object to vibrate by absorbing energy at its natural frequency
Amplitude Measure of the energy in a wave
