Work, Power, Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| work | when a force moves an object over a certain distance; distance and force must be in the same direction |
| power | how much work is done in a certain amount of time |
| energy | the ability to do work |
| potential energy | stored energy |
| kinetic energy | the energy of an object due to its motion |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | energy cannot be created or destroyed, it just changes form; the total energy of a system does not change |
| Joule | the unit for work and energy; also equal to 1 Newton-meter |
| Watts | the unit for power; also equal to 1 J/s |
| gravitational potential energy | energy stored due to the position of the object above the surface of the earth |
| electrical potential energy | energy stored due to the position of charges relative to each other |
| chemical potential energy | energy stored in the chemical bonds of molecules for reactions |
| nuclear potential energy | energy stored in the nucleus of an atom that can cause enormous explosions |
| thermal energy | heat released as a result of kinetic energy |
| sound energy | sound released as a result of kinetic energy |
| radiant (electromagnetic) energy | light released as a result of kinetic energy |
