Mystery Vocabulary

| means | the ability to commit a crime |
| detective | the character who will solve the mystery |
| suspense | anxiety or excitement about an outcome |
| evidence | something that furnishes proof of a crime |
| motive | a reason to commit a crime |
| red herring | a false clue |
| mystery | a puzzling crime that must be solved |
| alibi | proof of one's location at the time the crime is committed |
| suspect | someone that furnishes prof of a crime |
| denouement | the resolution of a mystery |
| cliffhanger | an exciting ending that makes it hard to put the book down. They are found at the end of a chapter or the end of a book. |
| foreshadowing | a hint or clue about what is going to happen later in the story. |
| danger | is important to a mystery. Usually the person trying to solve the mystery is put into several dangerous situations. |
| Cozy mystery | Gentle & refined setting. (A beautiful home) until the crime is discovered. |
| Hardboiled Detective Mystery | Takes place in a tough place, one that you wouldn't want to walk in alone. |
| Police Procedural Mystery | Includes a detective or policeman trying to solve the crime. Many of the scenes will take place in a police department and the detectives follow a lot of police department rules. |
| Amateur Detective | A person who gets involved in solving the crime by accident. They do not follow police rules, and they have good common sense. |
| Inevitability | is the sense of "it had to be" by the reader. |
