Sex and gender

TermDefinition
Sex A biological term referring to the sex organs, hormones and chromosomes someone has
Gender A psychological term that tells us whether an individual is masculine, feminine or androgynous
Masculinity A gender term associated with male traits/roles
Femininity A gender term associated with female traits/roles
Androgyny A type of gender where an individual shows high levels of both masculine and feminine traits
Chromosone A part of a cell that contains genetic information
Hormone A chemical produced by the body that affects cells and organs
Evolution A process by which species adapt to their environment in order to survive and reproduce
Oedipus complex A theory created by Freud that states a boy grows a desire for their mother subconsciously and believe if the father finds out they will cut off their penis - this is resolved by boys identifying with their father and develops a masculine gender identity
Electra complex: Part 1 A theory created by Freud that states that a girl desires their father because they desire a penis and blame their mother for not having one and believe they have been castrated. They realise they will never get one so desire a baby which -
Electra complex: Part 2 is a penis substitute. By this point, girls recognize they are in the same position as their mothers, so identify with them and develop a feminine gender identity.
