Text aids

academic vocabulary for features of a text that help a reader to understand cont

boldface words in darker print
italics words that are slanted to the right
type set in color words written in colors other than black
underlining words that are underlined
indentation writing that is indented - words start a line over from the margin
sidebars - new information about he subject that is written to the side (or top or bottom) of an article; usualy separated with a box or similar device
graphics illustrations, charts, pictures or any other visual information
headings identifies major topics of a text (title)
subsection separates a text into sections
footnotes explanatory information located at the bottom of the page
annotations notes at the end of the selection
caption information under a photo or illustration
label identifies parts of a picture or diagram
subheading title for a section of text
