| adenocarcinoma | cancerous tumor of a gland |
| adenoidectomy | surgical removal of the adenoids |
| adenoids | lymphatic tissue on the posterior wall of the nasopharynx |
| adenopathy | disease of a gland |
| agammaglobulinemia | the absence of gamma globulin in the blood causing the body to be unable to produce antibodies |
| alpha-fetoprotein | serum blood test to detect liver cancer |
| asymptomatic | without symptoms |
| attenuated | weakened |
| autoimmunity | a condition in which the body produces antibodies against itself |
| candidiasis | fungal yeast infection |
| carcinolysis | destruction of cancer |
| cytologic examination | an examination to study the formation, structure, & function of cells |
| disseminated | scattered over a considerable part of the body |
| dormant | a period when cancer cells remain inactive |
| ELISA | initial HIV antibody test to detect the presence of HIV infection |
| encapsulated | tumor that does not infiltrate surrounding tissue |
| hepatosplenomegaly | enlargement of the liver & spleen |
| Hodgkin's disease | malignant, painless enlargement of the lymph nodes |
| hyperplasia | excessive development |
| immune | to be resistant to a disease |
| immunoglobulin | blood proteins; antibodies |
| immunologist | one who studies immunology |
| in situ | cancer in a localized spot |
| infectious mononucleosis | acute viral infection caused by the Epstein barr virus |
| leukemia | malignant blood disorder where there is an over abundance of WBCs |
| lipoma | a fatty tumor |
| lymph | clear, watery fluid formed from interstitial fluid |
| lymphadenectomy | surgical removal of a lymph gland |
| lymphangioma | tumor of lymphatic vessels |
| lymphoidectomy | surgical removal of lymphatic tissue |
| lymphoma | tumor in the lymphatic tissue |
| lymphosarcoma | malignant neoplastic disorder of the lymphatic tissue |
| mastectomy | surgical removal of the breast |
| melanocarcinoma | black, cancerous tumor |
| metastasis | movement of cancer cells from one part of the body to another |
| oncogenesis | formation of cancer cells |
| opportunistic infections | diseases which take the opportunity to cause infection when the immune system is depressed |
| palliative | treatment provided to relieve symptoms |
| papilloma | nipple-like tumor |
| radiation therapy | the use of radiation to destroy cancer cells |
| remission | the lessening in severity or abatement of the symptoms of disease |
| sarcoma | a type of skin cancer |
| scirrhus | a hard, cancerous tumor |
| spleen | organ which stores platelets & filters old RBCs |
| splenalgia | pain in the spleen |
| splenectomy | surgical removal of the spleen |
| splenomegaly | enlargement of the spleen |
| splenopexy | surgical fixation of the spleen |
| splenoptosis | prolapse of the spleen |
| splenorrhaphy | suturing of the spleen |
| Systemic Lupus Erythematosus | an autoimmune disorder of connective tissue |
| thymopathy | disease of the thymus gland |
| thymus gland | gland located in the mediastinum which produces T cells |
| tonsil | a mass of lymphatic tissue located on both sides of the back of the pharynx |
| tonsillectomy | surgical removal of the tonsils |
| tonsillitis | inflammation of the tonsils |
| vaccine | a live or killed suspension that will cause the body to build antibodies |
| western blot | confirmatory test for he presence of HIV infection |
| splenorrhagia | hemorrhage of the spleen |
