| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Conduction | transfer heat by directly touching an object to another object |
| Convection | The transfer of heat because of the up and down flow of air or fluids due to difference in temperatures |
| Radiation | The transfer of heat through a space |
| Temperature | a measure of the average amount of kinetic energy |
| Absolute zero | temperature point at which all molecular and atomic motion stops |
| Equilibrium | reached when the temperature of a substance reaches the same amount of heat |
| Thermal insulators | Any object that does not transfer heat well |
| Thermal conductor | any object that does transfer heat well |
| Thermal Expansion | increase in the volume of a substance due to an increase in temperature |
| Heat | Type of energy transferred between objects that are at different |
| Kelvin | The temperature scale that shows water boils at 373 and freezes at 273 |
| Celsius | The temperature scale that shows water boils at 100 and freezes at 0 |
| Fahrenheit | The temperature scale that shows water boils at 212 and freezes at 32 |
| Thermometer | A devise or tool used to find the average kinetic energy of a substance |
