Changes of State

Chapter 3 Section 2 Physical Science

QuestionAnswer
Melting A change in state from a solid to a liquid.
Melting Point The specific temperature that melting occurs.
Freezing The change of state from liquid to solid.
Vaporization The change from a liquid to a gas.
Evaporation Vaporization that takes place only on the surface of a liquid.
Boiling When a liquid changes to a gas below its surface as well as at surface.
Boiling Point The temperature at which a liquid boils.
Condensation When particles in a gas lose enough thermal energy to form a liquid.
Sublimation The surface particles of a solid gain enough energy that they form a gas.
What happens to the particles of a liquid as they lose more and more energy? The particles move more and more slowly.
How do clouds typically form? Water vapor in the atmosphere condense into liquid droplets.
What physical state is skipped during the sublimation of a substance? The liquid state is skipped.
What happens to the particles of a solid as it becomes a liquid? The particles break free from their fixed positions.
How melts?does the thermal energy of solid water change as it The thermal energy increases.
What process occurs as pieces of dry ice gradually get smaller? The process of sublimation.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
