Technical terms to be familiar with and to use in your writing when applicable.

argument | (noun) a reasoned and logical way of demonstrating that the writer's position, belief, or conclusion is valid |
claim | (verb) to state or assert that something is the case, typically without providing evidence or proof; (noun) in argument writing, a debatable statement or assertion that is often expressed as the thesis statement |
counterclaim | (noun) a claim made to rebut a previous claim; also referred to as an alternate claim, opposing claim, or counterargument |
point of view | (noun) in argument writing, this refers to the author's position as conveyed by his/her argument and words |
reason | (noun) a statement that explains why something is the way it is; a cause, explanation, or justification for action or event; in argument writing, reasons support an opinion or claim; like claims, reasons are debatable. |
reasoning | (verb) the process of thinking about something in a logical way |
rhetoric | (noun) language that is intended to persuade the audience; the art of speaking or writing effectively, especially as a way to influence a reader or listener |
source | (noun) in a writing task, the source text is the text from which evidence is taken (also referred to as a stimulus text) |
