TermDefinition
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Physical changes Any change that alters form or appearance of matter but, DOES NOT CHANGE! any substance in the matter to a difference. Changing substance but, NOT WHAT IT IS!
Chemical changes A change in matter that produces one or more NEW substances.
Weight Gravity pulls on an object, DOES change!
Mass Matter in an object, does NOT change!
Volume length * width * height. The amount of space occupied.
Qualitative Observations Made by gathering information that can be recorded using DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE!
Quantitative Observations Made by gathering information that can be recorded with a MEASUREMENT UNIT!
Inference NOT A FACT, but an INTERPRETATION of what the direct observations mean.
Scientific Law Describes what scientist EXPECT to happen every time under a particular condition.
Constant Part of an experiment that is HELD IN THE SAME CONDITION for control and experimental
Variable Part of the experiment that CHANGES!
Independent Variable (manipulated variable) A factor in a controlled experiment that is INTENTIONALLY CHANGED BY THE EXPERIMENTER!
Scientific Theory A WELL TESTED EXPLANATION for a wide range of observations or experimental results

Dependent Variable (responding variable) A resulting factor in a controlled experiment that is observed and MEASURED TO SEE IF IT CHANGES DUE TO MANIPULATION OF ANOTHER VARIABLE.
Experiment A COURSE OF ACTION completed in order to test a hypothesis.
Control A standard to which all OTHER levels are compared in a scientific experiment.
Mixture matter that consists of two or more substances not chemically combined
Element the simplest type of pure substance
Compound two or more elements chemically combined
Pure Substances a substance made of only one kind of material having definite proportional amounts and properties
Homogeneous Mixture two or more substances not chemically combined, but appearing to be evenly blended
Heterogeneous Mixture two or more substances not chemically combined, and appearing non-uniform with physically distinct substances included
