| Term | Definition |

| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| physical | A change in the appearance, but not WHAT IT IS. |
| chemical | a change in matter that produces one or more NEW substances. |
| weight | the gravity on an object. |
| mass | matter in an object. |
| qualitative | made by gathering information that can be recorded using descriptive language. |
| quantitative | made by gathering information that can be recorded as a number with a measurement unit. |
| inference | not a fact, but an interpretation of what the direct observations mean. |
| scientific law | describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a set of conditions. |
| constant | a part of an experiment that is held in the same condition for control and experimental |
| variable | part of the experiment that changes. |
| manipulated variable | a factor in a controlled experiment that is intentionally changed by the experimenter. |
| theory | a well tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results |
| inquiry | to ask information |
| dependent variable | a resulting factor in a controlled experiment that is observed and measured to see if it changes due to the manipulation of another variable. |
