| Qualitative Inference | made by gathering information that can be recorded using descriptive language |
| Quantitative Inference | made by gathering information that can be recorded as a number with a measurement unit |
| Inference | not a fact, but an interpretation of what the direct observations mean |
| Scientific Law | describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions |
| Constant | part of an experiment that is held in the same condition for control and experiment |
| Variable | part of the experiment that changes |
| Independent/Manipulative Variable | a factor in a controlled experiment that is intentionally changed by the experimenter |
| Scientific Theory | a well tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results |
| Inquiry | to ask for information |
| Dependent/Responding Variable | a resulting factor in a controlled experiment that is observed and measured to see if it changes due to the manipulation of another variable |
| Experiment | a course of action completed in order to test a hypothesis |
| Control | a standard to which all other levels are compared in a scientific experiment |
| Matter | has mass and takes up space |
| Physical Property | any change that alters form or appearance of matter but doesn't make any substance in the matter into a different substance (changes outside but not inside) |
| Chemical Property | a change in matter that produces one or more new substances |
| Weight | the amount of gravity on something |
| Mass | the amount of matter in an object |
