5th grade Science Vocabulary list

TermDefinition
mixture A combination of two or more ingredients that can be separated by using their physical properties
solution A mixture that involves at least one liquid and the ingredients blend, so the substance appears to be one thing.
dissolve The breaking down of particles in a liquid, into such small pieces they become invisible, thus creating a solution.
solubility The ability of a solid to dissolve in water.
separate To group into the original substances
filter A tool with different sized holes that is used to separate a mixture; based on the size of the particles.
funnel A cone shaped tool used to pour substances into a narrow opening.
constant Not changing. Staying the same.
sieve A tool made of a wire or plastic mesh held in a frame, used for straining solids from liquids, for separating coarser from finer particles.
exert To put into use by applying some force.
