Skeletal System - Pathology

TermDefinition
Ankylosis Loss or absence of mobility in a joint due to disease, an injury or a surgical procedure.
Arhralgia Pain in a joint.
Chondroma A slow growing benign tumor derived from cartilage cells.
Luxation Aslo know as dislocation.
Subluxation A partial displacement of the bone from its joint.
Arthritis An inflammatory condition of one or more joints.
Lumbago Pain of the lower back region.
Spondylosis Any degenerative condition of the vertebrae
Spina Bifida The congenital defect that occurs during early pregnancy in which th spinal canal fails to close around the spinal cord.
Kyphosis An abnormal increase in the outwart curvature of the spine, also known as humpback.
Lordosis An abnormal increas in the forward curvature of the lower or lumbar spine, also known as swayback.
Scoliosis An abnormal lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine.
Osteomyelitis An inflammation of the bone and bone marrow.
Rickets Caused by calcium and vitamin D deficiencies in early childhood. Also seen in the early years of sea travel.
Myeloma A malignant tumor composed of cells derived from blood-forming tissues of the bone marrow.
Osteoporosis Loss of bone density and an increase in bone porosity, frequently associated with aging.
Arthroscopy The visual examination of the internal structure of a joint.
Arthroplasty Any surgical repair of a damaged joint.
Craniectomy The surgical removal of a portion of the skull.
Craniotomy A surgical incision or opening into the skull that is performed to gain access to part of the brain.
Ostectomy The surgical removal of bone.
Osteoplasty The surgical repair of bones.
