| Term | Definition |

| fate | the belief that every person has a destiny in life, created by god(s), which is generally unknown to the person, but which is known by the god(s). |
| free-will | the idea that people do not have a fate but the freedom to determine their own direction in life; people have the freedom to create their own destiny. |
| tragedy | a type of play in which all main characters die in the end as a result of destiny (fate) or poor choices (free-will). |
| tragic flaw | a character or personality trait that causes a character to make poor choices or similar patterned choices. |
| tragic hero | a character who dies as a result of making poor or patterned choices; (or) a character who dies because of choices determined by fate. |
| soliloquy | a speech a character gives in plays that allows the audience to hear what the character is thinking inside his/her head. |
| conflict | a problem or set of problems that motivate a character or set of characters to action in order to resolve the problem. |
| pathetic fallacy | an emotional mistake; a rhetorical technique whereby the inanimate objects are given human attributes or qualities. |
| foreshadowing | a symbol or even that predicts an event to come in the future; typically, foreshadowing predicts a negative or dangerous event. |
| premonition | a vision (image, dream, flash) of something to come or happen in the future; typically it is associated with a negative event. |
