Energy
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Conduction | process by which energy is transferred from a warmer object to a cooler object by physical contact |
Convection | process by which energy is transferred in gases and liquids, occurring when a warmer, less dense area of gas or liquid is pushed up by a cooler, more dense area of the gas or liquid |
Heat | energy that is transferred from a warmer object to a cooler object |
Kinetic energy | energy of motion |
Law of Conservation of Energy | energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another or transferred from one place to another |
Potential energy | stored energy that an object has due to its position or chemical composition |
Radiation | process by which energy is transferred through empty space in waves |
Energy | The ability to do work or cause a change |
Transformation | a change of energy from one form to another |
Transfer | a change in energy from one location to another |
Fluid | a substance that can flow easily, such as a gas or a liquid |
Friction | a force that resists the motion between two surfaces that are in contact with one another |
Mass | the amount of matter in an object |
Mechanical energy | energy that moves objects |
Sound energy | energy resulting from vibrations of particles in matter; cannot travel through empty space |
Effort | the amount of force used to move an object over a distance |
Distance | the extent or amount of space between two things, points, lines, etc. |
Electromagnetic energy | energy transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves |
Work | the use of force to move an object over a distance |
Chemical energy | energy stored in the chemical make-up (composition)of matter |
Thermal energy | the total amount of energy from the movement of particles in matter (heat energy) |
Nuclear energy | energy produced through joining of the nuclei of two atoms (fusion) or breaking apart of a nucleus (fission) |
Energy efficiency | measurement of usable energy after an energy conversion |
