describe the movement of particles in solids, gases, liquids, and plasma states
Term | Definition |
---|---|
state of matter | The physical forms of matter which include liquid, solid and gas |
solid | the state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance are fixed |
liquid | the state of matter that has a definite shape |
gas | a form of matter that does not have a definite volume or shape |
melting point | temperature at which solid changes to a liquid |
vaporization | process in which a liquid changes to a gas |
boiling point | temperature at which a liquid vaporizes and changes into a gas |
condensation | the changes of state from gas to a liquid |
freezing point | temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid |
sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly to a gas |
phase-change-diagram | drawing that shows the relationships among temperature and changes of state |
plasma | a state of matter that forms when temperatures are high enough to completely remove electrons from the atoms to which they were bound |
