Pure Substances and Mixtures
| Term | Definition |

| Atoms | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that substances. |
| Element | Made up of one or more of the same kind of atom chemically combined. |
| Compound | Made up of different kinds of atoms chemically combined. |
| Mixture | Contains a variety of elements and compounds that are NOT chemically combined with eachother. |
| Pure Substances | A substance that has definite physical and chemical properties. |
| Heterogeneous | A mixture that does not have a uniform composition. |
| Homogeneous | Describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout. |
| Liquid | The state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape. |
| Gas | A form of matter that does not have a definite volume of shape. |
| Freezing | The change of state from a liquid to a solid. |
| Melting | The change of state from a solid to a liquid. |
| Evaporation | The change of state from a liquid to a gas |
| Boiling | The change of state from a liquid to a gas that occurs at a specific temperature |
| Condensation | The change of state from a gas to a liquid |
| Sublimation | the change of state from a solid directly to a gas |
| Deposition | The change of state from a gas directly to a solid |
| Solid | The state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance are fixed. |
