Pure Substances and Mixtures

TermDefinition
Atoms The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that substances.
Element Made up of one or more of the same kind of atom chemically combined.
Compound Made up of different kinds of atoms chemically combined.
Mixture Contains a variety of elements and compounds that are NOT chemically combined with eachother.
Pure Substances A substance that has definite physical and chemical properties.
Heterogeneous A mixture that does not have a uniform composition.
Homogeneous Describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout.
Liquid The state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape.
Gas A form of matter that does not have a definite volume of shape.
Freezing The change of state from a liquid to a solid.
Melting The change of state from a solid to a liquid.
Evaporation The change of state from a liquid to a gas
Boiling The change of state from a liquid to a gas that occurs at a specific temperature
Condensation The change of state from a gas to a liquid
Sublimation the change of state from a solid directly to a gas
Deposition The change of state from a gas directly to a solid
Solid The state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance are fixed.
