Research Methods

TermDefinition
Inferential Statistics Researchers determine whether the obtained results support their hypothesis or whether these can be attributed to chance variation.
Mode The score appearing most frequently in a set of observations; a measure of central tendency.
Median The score in a distribution above and below 50% of other scores.
Range The difference between the highest and lowest scores in a set of observations.
Standard Deviation The average difference of a set of scores from the mean.
Hypotheses A tentative and testable explanation of the relationship between two or more variables often stated as a prediction.
Observer Bias The distortion of evidence because of personal motives and expectations of the viewer.
Operational Definition A definition of a variable or condition in terms of the specific operation or procedure.
Independent Variable The stimulus condition whose values are free to vary independently of other variables.
Standard Deviation The average difference of a set of scores from the mean.
Dependent Variable Any variable whose values are the result of changes in one ore more independent variables.
Placebo Effect A change in behavior in the absence of experimental manipulation.
Double-Blind Control Keeping participants and experimenters unaware of who has received specific treatments eliminates the biased expectations of experimenters.
Case Study The intensive observation of a particular individual or small group of individuals.
