Describe the difference between pure substances and mixtures
| Term | Definition |

| pure substance | a sample of matter, either a single element or a simple compound, that has definite chemical or physical properties |
| compound | a substance made up of atoms of 2 or more elements joined by chemical bonds |
| molecule | the smallest unit of a substance that keeps all physical and chemical properties of the substance |
| chemical formula | a combination of symbols and numbers to represent a substance |
| subscript | a small number written to the right and slightly below a chemical symbol to tell the number of atoms that the element substance |
| mixture | 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined |
