| Term | Definition |

| Pure Substances | A sample of matter, either a single element of single compound, that has a definite chemical and physical properties |
| Compound | A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| Molecule | The smallest unit of a substance that keeps all of the physical and chemical properties of that substances |
| Chemical Formula | A combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance |
| Subscript | A small number written to the right and slightly below a chemical symbol to tell the number of atoms of that element in the substance |
| Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
