Important Concepts and Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Generator Principle | The movement of a magnetic field relative to a conductor creates electricity |
| Motor Principle | The interaction of two magnetic fields creates motion |
| Relay Control Circuit | The electromagnetic coil of wire |
| Relay Load Circuit | A single-pole, double-throw switch |
| Relay Control Terminals | Terminals 85 & 86 |
| Relay Load Terminals | Terminals 87A, 87, & 30 |
| N.O. Contact | Terminal 87 |
| N.C. Contact | Terminal 87A |
| Relay Energized Connections | Terminals 30 & 87 |
| Relay De-energized Connections | Terminals 30 & 87A |
| Relay | An electromagnetic device that uses a low current circuit to activate a high current circuit |
| N.O. | Normally Open |
| N.C. | Normally Closed |
| Primary Winding | The transformer coil that carries input current to create a magnetic field |
| Secondary Winding | The transformer coil in which the output voltage is induced |
| Turns Ratio | It helps determine the output of a transformer based on the number of primary turns to the number of secondary turns. |
| Step-up Transformer | An electromagnetic device in which the number of secondary turns and output voltage is greater |
| Step-down Transformer | An electromagnetic device in which the number of secondary turns and output voltage is lower |
| Solenoid | An electromagnetic device that changes electrical energy in to a mechanical action |
| Latching Relay | A relay that stays energized until the main power source is removed |
| Magnetic Flux | The invisible lines of force surrounding a magnet |
