Chapter 3 vocabulary


Atom A small particle that makes up most types of matter.
Atomic mass Is the weighted average mass of the isotopes of an element.
Atomic number It tells you the number of protons in the nucleus of each atom of that element.
Electron They are invisible,negatively charged particles.
Element Is matter made of only on kind of atom.
Isotope Which are atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
Law of Conservation of Matter States that matter is not created or destroyed- it only changes form.
Mass number Is the number of protons plus the number of neutrons it contains.
Matter Is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Metal Generally have a shiny or metallic luster and are good conductors of heat and electricity.
Metalloid Are elements that have characteristics of metals and nonmetals.
Neutron Are particle that come from the nucleus and have no charge.
