Distinguish between atoms and molecules.

| Atoms | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element |
| element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substance by chemical means. |
| Nucleus | in physical science an atom's central region which is made of protons and neutrons |
| protons | a subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom. |
| neutrons | a subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom. |
| electrons | a subatomic particle that has a negative charge |
| atomic number | the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom the atomic number is the same for all atoms of an element |
| neutral | having no overall charge. |
| atomic mass | the mass of an atom expressed in atomic units. |
| chemical symbol | has one or two letters, the first letter is always capitalized any other letter is lowercase. |
