Distinguish between atoms and molecules.

| atoms | the smallest unit of element that maintains the properties of that element |
| element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means |
| nucleus | in physical science, an atom's central region, which is made up of protons and neutons |
| proton | a subatomic particle that has positive charge and that is found in nucleus of an atom |
| neutron | a subatomic that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| electron | a subatomic particle that has negative charge |
| atomic number | the number of protons in the nucleus of the an atom, the atomic number is the same for all atoms of element |
| neutral | having no overall charge |
| atomic mass | the mass of an atom expressed in atomic mass units |
