Distinguish between atoms and molecules.
| Term | Definition |

| Atom | the smallest unit of mass that maintains the properties of that element |
| Element | a substance that cant be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means |
| Nucleus | in physical science, an atoms central region, which is made up of protons & neutrons |
| Proton | a subatomic particle that has a positive charge and is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| Neutron | a subatomic particle that has no charge & is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| Atomic Number | the # of protons in the nucleus of an atom; the atomic # is the same for all atoms of an element |
| Neutral | having no overall charge |
| Atomic Mass | the mass of an atom expressed in atomic mass units |
| Chemical Symbol | a one or two letter code that represents a element |
| Electron | a subtonical particle with a negative charge |
