TermDefinition
numerical expression name for a number ( 4 + 6 is one for 10 )
variable letter or symbol used to represent a number
variable expression an expression that contains variables or variables and numbers
terms parts of an expression separated by + and -
numerical coefficent number in front of a variable ( 9 in 9a )
pemdas parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction
power a base with an exponent ( 5 cubed )
base the bottom number in a power ( 5 in 5 cubed )
exponent the top number in a power ( 3 in 5 cubed )
coefficent a number before the base ( 4 in 4x cubed )
commutative property the property that allows you to switch the order in which you add ( 4 + 5 = 5 + 4 )
associative property the property that allows you to switch grouping ( 3 + 4 ) + 5 = 3 + ( 4 + 5 )
identity property the property that involves zero and one, zero times
distributive property the property that lets you remove parentheses 3(4 + 5) = 3(4) + 3(5)
like terms terms with the same variable and variable exponent
whole number any number without a fraction above zero
integer any number without a fraction above or below zero
absolute value the distance a number is from zero l-2.5l = 2.5 or l2.5l =2.5
