| physical property | any characteristic or property that can be observed on a object without the composition being changed |
| viscosity | the tendency of a liquid to keep from flowing |
| pure substance | matter that always as exactly the same composition |
| atom | smallest particle of a element |
| element | a substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances |
| compound | a substance mad up of two or more simpler substances and can be broken down |
| heterogeneous mixture | a type of mixture in which the parts of the mixture are noticeably different with one another |
| solution | a mixture that forms when substances dissolve and form a homogeneous mixture. |
| suspension | when a heterogeneous mixture separates into layers over time |
| colloid | a mixture that contains some particles that are varying in size and suspension. |
| homogeneous mixture | a type of mixture in which the parts of the mixture are the same chemically |
| conductivity | the ability for electricity to be carried through particles |
| malleability | the ability for a solid to be harmed without shattering |
| melting point | the point at which a solid can melt into a liquid and not be turned into a gas |
| boiling point | the point at which a liquid can be transformed into a gaseous state |
| filtration | the process that separates particles based on size |
| distilation | the process that separates the substances in a solution based on boiling point |
| physical change | a change that occurs when the properties of a material change but the material does not change |
| chemical property | a property that causes change in the composition of matter |
| flammability | a materials ability to burn in the presence of oxygen |
| reactivity | the property that describes how readily that a substance chemically combines chemically with other substances |
| chemical change | a change that occurs when a substance reacts and forms one or more new substances |
| precipitate | a solid that forms and separates from a liquid mixture |
