Sensor Types
Term | Definition |

Potentiometer | A 3-wire variable resistor that varies voltage to the computer based on position - DC Analog output |
Switch | A mechanical device with only ON and OFF conditions - DC Digital output |
Rheostat | A 2-wire variable resistor that varies current based on position - DC Analog output |
Magnetic Pulse | Uses a rotating component and a pickup coil to send a signal to the computer based on rotational speed or position - AC Analog output |
Photoelectric | Use an LED and optical device to monitor rotational speed or position - DC Digital output |
Hall Effect | Use a magnet and an integrated circuit (chip) to monitor rotational speed or position - DC Digital output |
Thermistor | A variable resistor that changes its resistance due to temperature changes - DC Analog Output |
Piezoelectric | A sensor that generates a voltage output based on pressure changes - AC Analog output |
Piezoresistive | A sensor that changes its resistance based on pressure changes - DC Analog or Digital output |
Titanium O2S | A semiconductor oxygen sensor whose resistance changes based on oxygen content - DC Analog output |
Zirconium O2S | An oxygen sensor that varies its output voltage using galvanic reactions based on oxygen content in the exhaust - DC Analog output |
Piezocapacitive | A sensor that changes its capacitance based on pressure changes - DC Analog or Digital output |
