Atoms and Elements

QuestionAnswer
How are atoms and elements related? an atom is the smallest particle that can still be considered an element
what are the 3 particles that exist in atoms? what are their charges and where are they found? neutrons- no charge- nucleus protons- positive- nucleus electrons- negative- electron cloud
what is an element? a substance that cant be broken down into any other substances by physical or chemical means
what determines an elements chemistry? # of valence electrons in each atom determines the chemical properties of that element
what are valence electrons? electrons with highest energy, outer most shell
what is a chemical bond? force of attraction that holds atoms together as a result of rearrangement of electrons between them
what does the atomic number of an element tell you? number of protons in each atom of that element
how do you find out how many neutrons an atom of an element has? subtract the atomic mass and the atomic number
whats the chemical symbol for Krypton? Kr
how many protons does Radium have? 88
when atoms lose electrons they? become positively charged
in what bond does atoms exchange electrons? ionic
in ionic bonds, what goes first in the chemical formula name? cation
in the chemical formula Na2S, what does the number 2 represent? 2 sodium atoms
what is a covalent bond? bonds where electrons are shared between atoms
what is a polyatomic ion? ions that are made of more than one atom?
what is an independent variable? one factor that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
