|---|---|
| chemical change | when one substance changes into another substance |
| chemical property | characteristics of a substance indicating that it can change chemically (flammability or light sensitivity) |
| colloid | heterogeneous mixture with large particles that never settle |
| compound | pure substance with two or more elements combined in fixed proportion |
| distillation | a physical change; used for separating a mixture by evaporating a liquid and condensing its vapor |
| element | a pure substance with atoms that are all alike |
| heterogeneous | mixture of different and easily distinguishable materials |
| homogeneous | contains two or more gaseous, liquid, or solid substances blended together evenly; |
| law of conservation of mass | masses of all substances present before a chemical change equals the mass of all substances after the change. |
| physical change | change in a substance's size, shape, or state of matter |
| physical property | characteristics of a substance that describes how it can be used to separate mixtures |
| solution | a homogeneous mixture (blended throughout) |
| substance | either an element or a compound |
| suspension | a heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which visible particles settle over time |
| Tyndall effect | colloids scattering light |
