| Term | Definition |

| plot | the events that occur in a story; what is done to solve the problems in a story |
| exposition | the first part of the plot where characters, setting, & basic situation are revealed in a story |
| setting | where & when a story takes place |
| inciting incident (motivating force) | the event that sets the story in motion and makes the rest of the story possible; the first event of the rising action |
| rising action | the main part of the story that moves the plot along and where the complications arise; the main events/complications leading up to the climax |
| complications | difficulties that make it harder to solve the major conflict of the story |
| climax | the most exciting or intense part of the story when the greatest (& usually the final) complication appears; it is usually a turning point where the major conflict comes to its peak & is solved |
| falling action | events that follow the climax that lead to the resolution and also where the more minor conflicts begin moving towards resolution |
| resolution (conclusion) | the end of the story where loose ends are tied up, any remaining questions are answered, & the conflicts are resolved |
| conflict | a struggle or problem that a character must overcome |
| protagonist | someone who helps solve the problem of the story; the "good guy" |
| antagonist | someone who makes it more difficult to solve the problem of the story; the "bad guy" |
