| satire | a mode of writing that exposes the failings of individuals, institutions, or societies to ridicule or scorn them |
| parody | a mocking imitation of the style of a literary work or works, ridiculing through exaggerated mimicry |
| overstatement | a type of exaggeration; to state something too strongly |
| sarcasm | a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark |

| trope | a figure of speech (using words beyond their literal meaning) |
| in medias res | when a narrator begins telling a story at some exciting point in the middle of the action |
