Ohler Vocabulary

Phishing Phishing is a con game that scammers use to collect personal information from unsuspecting users. Done via email, webpages and other mediums. ***Our students need to understand how accessible the information the put online is to outsiders.
VR Virtual Reality ***Do our students know the difference?
RL Real Life ***Our students need to realize the impact virtual reality can have on real life.
Sexting sending suggestive photos or videos via cell phones. *** Students often don't realize the damage this can cause or the legal ramifications behind it.
Grooming Techniques used by child predators to gain your trust.
Intellectual Property Intellectual property includes art, books, inventions, magazines, movies, music, performances, reports, software, stories created by you or by others. ***This is very important for students to know especially if they're using media for projects.
Digital Footprint A digital footprint is all of the information online about a person either posted by that person or others, intentionally or unintentionally. ***This goes along with phishing and the importance of understanding what can be accessed.
Flame a deliberately mean spirited message sent to others on the internet. ***Similar to cyber-bullying. It should have no place in our schools.
Emoticon A simple face, sometimes animated, that expresses an emotion. Emoticons let you show someone online how you are feeling. ***This is an ever growing communication system.
Malware Stands for malicious software or code, which includes any harmful code—trojans, worms, spyware, adware, etc.—that is designed to damage the computer or collect information.
