IESS Explorers Vocabulary

TermDefinition
cod A type of fish that Cabot found near Newfoundland.
scurvy An illness that is caused by a lack of vitamin C.
mutiny To leave the ship's captain behind and take the ship.
silk An expensive fabric made by silkworms.
trade To give something to someone in exchange for something else.
smallpox An illness that killed many First Nations people. The disease was usually on the blankets that Europeans gave First Nations People.
Far_East The name given to China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea
navigator A person who finds the way to go.
route The way to get to somewhere.
trader A person whose business was exchanging goods
colony A town or settlement made by people from another country.
spices Something used to flavour or preserve food.
historian A person who studies hi story.
passage The way through somewhere.
permanent Something that cannot be moved and will last a long time.
geographer A person who studies the land features on the earth.
explore To go to new places to see what is there.
Iroquois The group of First Nations people who helped Cartier.
