| Why can't you hear sound in space? | Sound waves require a medium and there isn't one in space for the sound to travel on. |

| Mechanical Wave | a wave that requires a medium |
| Seismic Wave | waves that travel through the Earth as a result of tectonic plates colliding. |

| Trough | the lowest point on a wave |
| Rarefaction | part of a longitudinal wave where the energy is spread out |
| Compression | part of a longitudinal wave where the energy is together |
| Frequency | how many waves go by a point in a certain amount of time |
| Amplitude | the height of a wave measure from rest to either crest or trough |
| Wavelength | measurement of a wave from crest to crest or trough to trough |
