Socials 8 geography

General geographic terms

QuestionAnswer
Latitude Imaginary line that circles the Earth, parallel to the equator, distance measured from South to North
Longitude Distance measured East to West from an imaginary line called the prime meridian
Relief/topography The shape and surface of the land (height as well)
Contour A contour is a line on a map that joins points that are the same elevation/altitude
Cape A cape is a headland or large piece of land that extends into a large area of water (usually the sea) eg. Cape of good hope (South Africa)
Isthmus A narrow piece of land in between two pieces of big land
Strait A narrow piece of water that is in between two pieces of land
Gulf A gulf of a portion of an ocean or sea that is partly enclosed by land(like a large bay) eg. Gulf of Alaska and gulf of Mexico
Plateau High line, flat land
Plain Low line, flat land
Archipelago A group of islands
Altitude/elevation Height above sea level. The height that something is above. A reference point - usually height above sea level in feet or meters
