Summer School 14
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Volume | a measure of the size of body or region in three dimensional space |
| Meniscus | the curve at a liquids surface |
| Mass | a measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| Weight | a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object |
| Inertia | the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion unless an outside force acts on it |
| Physical Property | a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such a density, colour, or hardness |
| Thermal Conductor | a material through which energy can be transferred as heat |
| Density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance |
| Solubility | the ability of once substance to dissolve in another at a given temperature and pressure |
| Physical Change | a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
| Chemical property | a property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions |
| Chemical change | a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
| State | liquid, solid, gas |
| Units of Measure for Liquids | liters |
| Correct way to measure liquid in a cylinder | read the scale at the lowest part of the meniscus at eye level |
| Equation for Density | D=M/V |
| Signs of Chemical Change | change in colour and odor, production of heat, fizzing and foaming |
