First Nations Vocabulary

| dogsled | a way for traveling on snow where a toboggan was pulled by dogs. |
| herd | a large group of animals such as bison. |
| bison | a large animal on the plains with shaggy hair and horns. |
| salmon | a large fish found in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans |
| wigwam | a rounded house made of bent wood covered by grasses or bark |
| gathering | a way of collecting food by picking wild plants |
| elders | people who are older than you |
| longhouse | a long wooden house that could house many families |
| village | a small group of houses and buildings |
| snowshoes | a wide oval of wood and animal skin that people wore over their shoes to walk on top of snow |
| teepee | a cone-shaped house that could be moved easily to follow animals |
| permanent | something that can't be moved |
| cousin | a child of your parent's brother or sister |
| stomach | a sac inside a creature where food is broken up |
| canoe | a small boat that can hold many people |
| maize | another word for corn |
| moccasin | a type of shoe made of soft leather |
| totem_pole | a tall wooden symbol that was carved with animals |
| band | a group of people with the same purpose |
| three_sisters | the food of the Farmers of the Eastern Woodlands: corn, beans and squash |
| igloo | a round house made of ice blocks |
| uncle | your parent's brother |
| potlatch | a ceremony of feasting, drinking and eating where a chief shared his wealth |
| kayak | a small boat that is closed on top and can hold 1 person |
| member | somebody who belongs to a group |
| pit_house | a type of home that had a roof over a hole in the ground |
| horns | the bones on the side of the animal's head |
| chief | the leader of a first nations tribe |
| hide | the skin of an animal that can be used to make leather |
