| alliteration | the repetition of the same or very similar sounds in words that are close together |
| antagonist | a person who opposes or fights against another; enemy |
| author purpose | the author's reason for writing (persuade,inform, express, or entertain) |
| autobiography | a writer's account on his or her own life written from first person point of view |
| basic situation | the part of the plot that tells who the characters are and what their conflict/problem is |
| biographys | the story of a person's life written in third person point of view |
| cause | the reason something happens which occurs prior to the result |
| character | a person, or animal in a play, story, or other literary piece |
| characterization | the six ways an reveals the nature of a character; describing how they look, speaks, acts, feels, what other characters say and of the character, or by directly telling what their personality is like |
| climax | the point in the plot where the outcome of the conflict is decided one way or another; the most exciting moment |
| compare | when you look for similarities or ways things are alike |
| complications | the part of the story where problems arise as characters take steps to resolve their conflict |
| conflict | a struggle or clash between opposing forces |
| contrast | when you look for differences or how things are unlike others |
| dialogue | conversations between two or more characters |
| drama | a story or play written out to be acted out in front of an audience |
| effect | what happens as a result of something or after an event |
| essay | a short piece of non-fiction writing |
| external-conflict | a conflict between a character and an outside force, such as character, society, weather, or technology |
| fable | a very brief story that teaches a moral; a practical lesson on how to succeed in life |
| fact | something which can be proven |
| falling action | the events in a plot which occur after the climax but before the resolution |
| fantasy | imaginative writing that carries the reader into an invented where the laws of nature as we know them do not operate |
| fiction | writing that is made up rather than true |
| figurative language | language that describes one term as something else and is not literally true such as, similes, metaphors, hyperbole, or personification |
| first-person | one of the characters using the personal pronoun "I", telling the story |
| flashback | a scene that breaks normal time order or sequence of events of the plot to show a past event |
| foltale | a story with no known author, originally passed down from one generation to another |
