| Solute | The substance that is dissolved into another |
| Solvent | The substance that dissolves another substance |
| Aqueous solution | A solution with water as the solvent |
| Solubility | A measure of the ability of a given solute to dissolve in a given solvent |
| Concentration | A measure of how much solute is dissolved into a solvent |
| Saturated solution | A solution that can not dissolve any more material |
| Unsaturated solution | A solution that can hold more dissolved material |
| Supersaturated solution | A solution that is temporarily holding more material than normally able at its temperature |
| Acid | A solution with an excess of H+ ions |
| Base | A solution with an excess of OH- ions |
| Indicator | A material that changes color when exposed to an acid or a base |
| pH | The proportion of free H+ (or H30+) ions in solution |
| Strong acid | An acid with a very low pH that dissociates completely in solution |
| Strong base | A base with a very high pH that ionizes completely in solution |
